My daughter and I have just completed this superb walk. The waymarking has been mainly excellent; the only two black spots we found were negotiating the Olympic park, and Harrow school, where all signage seems to have disappeared. The walk was a real eye opener, with always something to look at, comment on, or simply enjoy. We were amazed by the number of open areas and small parks that we found ourselves walking through, all connected by almost hidden, almost secretive footpaths.

I first completed the Capital Ring in 2009 and really enjoyed it. I have just completed it again and enjoyed it even more. Some of the signage seems to have been removed. I thought it may have taken me through the Olympic Park now but it didn’t. Got a bit lost a few times at sections that were closed but Google maps came to the rescue. Hopefully I will do it for a third time in another 5 years. I’ll try get a new set of leaflets then as some parts seem to have changed

I encountered the problem reported in 2012 with the gate at Bargehouse Road on the approach to North Woolwich. There is a button to press to open the gate but it does not work. As a nearby road is also blocked by a locked gate, I had to backtrack on the alternative route to the A117 and continue westwards to Bargehouse Road in order to return to the path.

I walked from Beulah Hill, anti clockwise to Highgate. Great walk and we had some great moments, especially in the southeast. I’m looking forward to doing the other half in the near future.

Richmond U3A Ramblers have recently completed the Capital Ring: it took us four years (only two or three stages per year). Only two of us completed every stage, but we walked over 1000 miles in total and enjoyed it greatly. Many thanks to all concerned with the planning and signing.

Finished The Capital Ring on Friday (20th June 2014) and have really enjoyed it.Like some others have said, some of the signs could have been a bit better, especially at Fryent Country Park in Wembley and some of the ones in Queen’s Wood, Highgate.Looking forward to starting a new walk now!

Loved this walk, brilliantly planned and executed with (mostly) great signage. It was a revelation and I really looked forward to each section. Only grumbles were around the Olympic park where I got hopelessly lost and somehow the Capital Ring signage is drowned by the deluge of other newer perhaps more fashionable walks. Some updating work on this section would perfect the route.

Have only just started walking the Capital Ring and have got as far as Crystal Palace but would just like to say that the signage is excellent. Well done to whoever does this job!

Walked the Capital Ring over the February half term walking 5 days in a 9 day period with my daughter, Ally and her friend Del.Amazing to see how beautiful and interesting our City is, from the richness of the parks and commons to the grafitti lined canals in east London.Highlights – Highgate to Finsbury Park disused branch line, the Lea Valley, the canals, Castlewood, Richmond Park and walking along the Thames in Richmond.Lastly a great way to bond with your 15 old daughter!

Just finished the walk today after starting way back in February 2012 and completing a stretch every few months.. Highlights were Clissold and Abney Parks; and the variety in the stretches from Greenford to South Kenton and Crystal Palace to Streatham.Really enjoyed it and looking forward to London Loop next! This is an appeal to anyone who feels like a challenge over the festive season- help to trample the path around the diversion at King George V lock gates on Section 15: I have cleared a track through the brambles (11.12.13) and just need many boots to finish the Job. Any offers?

Finished the Capital Ring walk today, a year and a week after we first started. I think it would be true to say that we enjoyed every minute of it, fortified as we were each time with bacon butties and kitkats!Highlights? Possibly the sunset at the end of the second stretch as we walked through Oxley Park, or the view of Wembley from Butts HillBest bacon butties – without a doubt at Crystal Palace, and a mention for Mannies Cafe at Boston Manor as well. Can’t wait to start on the London Loop.

Finished running the Capital Ring yesterday – after seven sunny weekend runs in 2013.It was a great experience; linking so many interesting and green corners of London that I hadn’t seen before.A fantastic way to train for a Marathon, running longer sections each time.I always paused to take lots of photos though. The greenest part is of course the South West section across Richmond, but the most interesting is the North East and the ever changing Lea valley.A brilliant experience.

Yesterday we completed the last three sections of The Capital Ring. We started in January 2012. What a fantastic adventure it has been. We had no idea that there were so many beautiful, green places near to London. We had a long cold drink and dinner in a pub to celebrate finishing. Our best comedy moment was realising after 13 miles that we would have to tackle the stairs of the foot tunnel. Lots of laughs as we staggered up those last few steps. Many thanks for such enjoyable Saturdays.

I probably did this slightly different to most people – aiming to do it in summer evenings on the occasions that I was down in the City for work. Took me 3 summers – but that was the plan. Great experience. Summary blog, with links to stages, at – http://mappiman.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/the-capital-ring-summary.html
Mappiman30/09/2013 6:30 pm

Good points: – the best sections are excellent – the weather was wonderful – I finished with a surprising ‘sense of achievement’ – you need orienteering skills and luck. – the Ring is quite unlike Central London Declaration of Interest: I was a member of the London Walking Forum when the Capital Ring route began life (1989-91).
Tom Turner10/09/2013 8:17 am

Just finished the Capital ring in 5 days – exhausted but very proud. Good combination of maps (print these from the website in colour otherwise the route is very hard to see!) directions and signposts meant I was confident walking on my own without my usual navigator – looking forward to getting my certificate through the post, Lovely idea!
Karen26/08/2013 4:53 pm

Have found the capital ring route very interesting. Got to see the real London! the nice and not so nice areas! I agree with other comments the signage needs improving in some areas easy to go wrong without book. Found the one set of gates locked at George V lock. Had to use diversion which is at the point of being impassable! needs sorting! favourite section was Wimbledon to Richmond saw no wombles though!London’s transport system is excellent – had great fun traveling around London, Love DLR

Starting the Capital Ring Route at 1pm this afternoon – very excited!! I’ll be doing all 15 sections across three weekends…wearing a giraffe costume. I’m raising money for Challenge Worldwide to help rebuild and improve St Lazarus school in the Kibera slums in Kenya. You could also win a £20 Amazon voucher if you spot me, take a photo, upload it to my facebook group www.facebook.com/groups/kimskenyanchallenge and make a donation at www.mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/kimtaylor1.Wish me luck!!
Kim27/07/2013 11:03 am

Completed the north of the river sections. Southern to do. Couple of thoughts. Signs were still missing in Harrow school May 2013. The Greenway section is boring, absolutely strewn with litter and smelt dreadful. Victoria Park in Hackney should be part of the route. Horsenden Hill is apparently quite popular with men seeking out other men for dubious activities and this might be an uncomfortable environment for some people.
Graham17/07/2013 11:23 am

We finally completed the Capital Ring yesterday! We officially started the walk in November 2009, though we had previously walked part of Section 14. We made fitful progress due to lots of other commitments. 2012 was a blank due to house moves and the Olympic diversions. Also during 2012, M celebrated her 80th birthday! (W is a mere 68.) We are so pleased to have got there in the end, and the completion certificate is about to be downloaded! Good luck to all Ring walkers!

Just finished this afternoon.Took me fourteen days spread over a period from April 2012 to May 2013.It would have been much quicker but for damaging knee ligaments last August. Some parts of London I would never have visited and some parts I won’t ever visit again! What did impress me, however, was the amount of greenery within the London boundaries and the beautiful well tended parks and green areas. Special mention goes to the wonderful Walthamstow Marshes!
Jaydeepee01/05/2013 8:05 pm

Finished yesterday 16/04, eight days from deepest winter to spring. Enjoyed it all: scenery, history, architecture, cafes (especially Crystal Palace station and new community café on Parkland Walk). Bleakness at Galleons Reach contrasts with beauty of parks, hills, woods, canals and rivers.
Sheila and Bay17/04/2013 7:13 pm

Started the walk on 2nd January, finished on 11th March. I walked alone, it was cold, it snowed, it was very muddy, and I loved it! Have been advertising it to all my friends as I used it to train for the Marsden March which is a sponsored 14 mile walk this Sunday. In general the signage was excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed reading Colin Saunders’ book on the way. (There is a new cafe at Beckenham Place which looks inviting, but I resisted as was too early for lunch.)
Josephine15/03/2013 0:46 pm

My friend Gerry and I have just completed the Capital Ring in seven days spread over six weeks, starting and finishing at the Fox, next to the route near the Hanwell Flight on walk 8. Generally very cold weather and sometimes snow underfoot which was great. A great concept, brilliantly realised and great fun – very different from our usual hill-walking in Scotland, but much closer to home. We start on the LOOP next week!
Stephen16/02/2013 0:30 pm

Just completed my latest stage – Brentford to Highgate, yesterday. Just enough to feel slightly exhausted today! All fine with signage except for in Temple Fortune, East Finchley – no clear signs from Lyttleton fields to East Finchley station. My having no map or 3g phone contributed!
Bob24/06/2012 0:32 pm
Thanks for the report. Would you like a certificate? We have forwarded the report about signage to [emailprotected] and also to Highways in Barnet and also London Streets (because Lyttlelton Road itself is part of the TfL Road Network) – this is the second report from a walker about missing wayfinding in this area. Thank you for taking the time to write in with your report
Walk London25/06/2012

We finished the Capital Ring today – started in Highgate in late January so it took us just over four months. A wonderful experience and a great opportunity to see both familiar and unfamiliar parts of London. With a very few exceptions the signage was excellent although it helped to have the book by Colin Saunders for reference. Highlights included walking by the Lea in Hackney Marshes, and the stretch across Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park, but it’s all good.
Martin04/06/2012 11:38 pm
Great news! The certificate that you requested via email is on its way.
Walk London04/06/2012

We finished the Capital Ring on Thursday. A great walk – London is quite rural in parts. Thanks to all the locals who were so friendly and really helpful, especially with bus routes. Sorry to see so much litter on the Grand Union Canal/Brent River stretch. The rest was very clean.

Nick and I completed the Capital Ring yesterday having started in 2011 almost a year ago and walking a couple of sections every so often when we had the time. We loved it, discovering parts of London we had never visited before and being able to access the Ring so easily by public transport. Was impressed by the route signage. Regarding previous comment, we had no trouble finding our way and the Foot tunnel was open.

Walk London13/05/2012

The Greenway is closed at Ford Lock and there is totally inadequate signage. I foolishly did not read the comments of others where there is advice on where to go and not having a map other than Colin Saunders excellent book I wandered for more than an hour before regaining the Greenway at West Ham. Furthermore the Thames Path is blocked near Bargehouse Road – the button does not open the gate (it was tied up with plastic ties) and this caused a further difficulty in finding a way round. Lastly the foot tunnel access rotunda was completely surrounded with a solid wooden fence and scaffolding so the ferry was currently the only option for me that day.
12/05/2012 6:33 pm
We will pass your comments about the olympics diversion signage on to LOCOG, they sent us a very comprehensive looking signage schedule so we don’t know what has gone wrong here. There are details of the diversion on the CR section 13 page, and a map to download – please do check in with the website before walking a section to make sure you have up-to-date information with you on site. Anybody who would like to see the full diversion signage schedule should email [emailprotected] The gate at Bargehouse Road (section 15) has been reported to Newham Borough Council planning enforcement.

I completed the Capital Ring a couple of weeks ago. What was supposed to be 7 walks over 2 months turned into 8 in 6 months due to an ankle injury, but I’m glad I finished it and am very proud of my certificate. I kept a blog of it here http://mycapitalringwalk.blogspot.co.uk/ and really loved the whole experience. Thanks so much for making it happen- the signage, the book and the printout maps were all excellent. CheersLizzie

Walk London29/04/2012

A sponsored walk with a difference, decided to do it in 6″ heel platform wedges! Many miles practice in advance paid off as I to completed the Ring in 16 days. Couldn’t have done it without the support of Toby who walked with me (must have been a painfully slow pace for him) and Jon & Ben who took time off to drive us to the start & finish points each day. Thanks to all the sponsors, especially to the wolf whistling workmen who gave so generously. Feet tired but no blisters! Raised over £300.

Walk London28/03/2012

Great walk, completed in 5 days. Much greener than it appears on maps. There were early morning stretches where I didn’t meet a soul. A well planned and signed route taking in woodland, parks, fields, canals, docks & rivers linked by mainly quiet residential streets. Many viewpoints, the one towards the City from west of Eltham Palace delayed me for sometime whilst I named the buildings. One disappointment was the closure of the Greenway where it passes the Olympic Stadium and The Orbit.
Richard Knight26/03/2012 11:09 am
Yes hopefully all the diversions near the Olympic Park will soon be over. We have updated the section pages on the Walk London website. Good news you completed it in 5 days! Would you like a certificate? If so email [emailprotected]
Walk London26/03/2012

Myself and fellow ultra-runner Phil Spiers ran the entire Capital Ring this past weekend, starting in Perivale at 9pm on Saturday. Aside from Finchley the route was easy to follow, even when running through the night. We expected most of the parks to be locked so planned our route around them. There was a frustrating (and wholly unnecessary) locked gate in the new development just east of the Woolwich Tunnel northern entrance. However, our overall experience was brilliant. All done in 19 hours!
Ian J Berry22/02/2012 9:17 pm
Wow, most impressive to complete the whole route in 19 hours, your certificate is on its way. Thinking about the gate you found, do you mean the gate where you have to press a button on the wall and it opens? Perhaps if you were running and so near the end you didn’t have time to work it out?
Walk London22/02/2012

Given that a number of the comments by walkers refer to missing directions, diversions, path closures, most of which are temporary, it would be helpful if all comments, but particularly Walk London’s replies, are dated to allow us to make up to date decisions on route variations.
Jay Hurles26/01/2012 10:39 am
We will ask the web developer if dates can automatically be added, thank you for the idea – PS this has now been done.
Walk London27/01/2012

We have just completed the Capital Ring over six days and received our completion certificates. As ex-Londoners we knew some of the route, but to link it all together in one long walk is a completely different experience. The signage is superb, with the book it is almost impossible to go wrong. It is helpful to be able to consult the Walk London website for up-to-date news of diversions. We have come away with a host of memories and will walk the London Loop next. Marie & Tony, N Yorks.

We are a group of families and friends who have just completed our final walk. It has taken over two years and has been lots of fun, giving us all a chance to get together and see previously unknown bits of London. We have numbered between 12 and 31 and ranged in age from 8 to 74.We all have our own highlights and memories whether we have completed the whole walk or just one section. We are all looking forward to our next challenge!

I have just finished the Capital Ring with my adult son Paul. We did it in 7 chunks starting and finishing in Stoke Newington. It was a very enjoyable experience. We even managed to laugh on the several occassions when we got lost due to poor signage or lack of signage. Using Colin Saunders’ guide book made it much easier. Thank you.

We have recently completed the Capital Ring doing a section each Monday and found it a very interesting and enjoyable experience. We would like to pass on our thanks and compliments on the excellent route and waymarking. We only had to cancel one walk – because it was too hot!

Three of us have just finished this walk, completed over 5 Mondays in roughly 20 mile stretches. It was a complete revelation to us all as it includes areas we have all worked in and thought we knew well, which are greener and more beautiful than ever suspected. A really enjoyable exercise. The section near Woolwich needs resigning as the ‘lock crossing’ seems to be permanently closed and is potentially dangerous.
Gill Zettle20/07/2011 11:26 am
Great! Have you asked for your certificate for completing the whole route? Simply email [emailprotected] Regarding the King George V Lock Gates in section 15, we have been advised by RoDMA that the gates have been undergoing emergency observations, checks and repairs, but that the outer dock gates should fixed by Friday 2nd September 2011.Meanwhile if walkers have downloaded their map from WalkLondon, they can take the alternative route over the Sir Stephen Redgrave Bridge.

A friend and I today completed the Captial Ring walk which we started last March (almost a year ago).We found it easy to follow and enjoyed the fact that it took us to parts of London we had never visited before, or even known existed.Great fun to do (especially if you have the book to tell you about the things you see on the way).I would recommend it to anyone who wants to explore and discover quiet corners of our capital.Pen Turner

1 (Woolwich to Falconwood)

Started the Capitol Ring and was pleasantly surprised. I was really eager to see the Severndroog Castle, but it is unfortunately (fortunately?) undergoing renovations of some sort and is completely under scaffolding. Shame I missed it, but hopefully it’s for the best for the building.
11/08/2013 7:24 pm

What a fantastic eye opener to this walk – from the bronze statues at Woolwich through to the views. We are so lucky to have this on our doorstep.
stephie19/10/2012 10:51 am

Did Section 1 yesterday (my birthday!) with my daughter. Enjoyed it but we did miss a couple of the marker posts (probably talking too much!) which meant we had to back-track a couple of times. Looking forward to the next 72 miles 🙂
28/09/2012 10:35 am

Started the Capital Ring walk yesterday with the first section from Woolwich. Most of the times signes were easy to see, but got confused at Shooters Hill and missed the castle.
02/07/2012 10:35 am

The Capital Ring guide book suggests we make use of the tea room and toilets at Charlton House, so we were planning to have lunch there. Unfortunately it’s only open from Monday to Friday so we had to go elsewhere.
12/03/2012 10:34 am

Yesterday we completed walk 1 of the Capital Ring. What a fantastic walk, with breathtaking views across London. It was made easy by the excellent signposts along the way, we didn’t lose our way once (unusual for us). We can’t wait to start walk number 2. Thank you for this fabulous website.
The Lamberts29/01/2012 5:52 pm
Good feedback about section 1, thanks for posting!
Walk London29/01/2012

Started Ring on Sat 14/01/12. On entering Hornfair Park we noticed an antique fair on our left the other side of a large fence in Park Lane somewhere. Went wrong here as sign post points right when it should be straight on past the play park. However, we did get to see Charlton open air Lido being renovated for the Olympics. Surprising views everywhere.

Thanks for the comment, the route manager is investigating your report of the sign on site.

2 (Falconwood to Grove Park)

We were lucky enough to do this on a glorious sunny October Sunday – what a treat the view from Oxleas Wood, the wander through the trees. Thank you for making this path.
Stephie19/10/2012 10:53 am

Well, having thoroughly enjoyed walk 1 we couldn’t wait to find a free weekend to complete walk 2. It certainly didn’t disappoint. Once again the route was well signposted (we still haven’t got lost!) and full of lovely surprises, a favourite being Eltham Palace we were also fortunate enough to see two beautiful foxes at different places en route. We had intended to complete this walk and perhaps do the first two miles of walk 3; however we couldn’t stop and carried on to Crystal Palace!
The Lamberts14/04/2012 10:40 pm
Thanks – great news!
Walk London14/04/2012

Look out for the marvelous skyline view of the north bank – Canary Wharf – to the London Eye, with Wembley Stadium shining behind.
Sara28/07/2011 6:04 pm

3 (Grove Park to Crystal Palace Park)

Again a lovely walk. Just a word of warning. At point B, the woodland walk, there is massive construction work going on during the school holidays and so the woodland is closed here. It’s worth printing off the map to find your way round.
Sara06/08/2011 11:19 am
Thanks for your useful report. The route manager is asking the borough for more information about the obstruction you found. We’ve found out that the route is closed until 2nd September 2011 so diversion information has now been listed on the relevant section pages for the Capital Ring and the Green Chain here on the Walk London website.
Walk London06/08/2011

4 (Crystal Palace to Streatham Common)

Completed this section 17/11/13, and it was a quick walk. It was quite cloudy and a little misty, so we missed the beautiful views. I would recommend this one for a bright, sunny day. Also, Norwood House is currently under renovations, so only a small slice of the building is visible. A shame too, pictures made it look beautiful
Karen17/11/2013 5:19 pm

5 (Streatham Common to Wimbledon Park)

We have started the ring with walk 5 and hope to complete the circuit by the end of 2013. Fantastic weather for it today. Have uploaded a few photos too. Great to discover London’s hidden gems…
Elaine and Mark04/06/2013 8:35 pm

Information: Whilst walking through Earlsfield Cemetery (if only to seek the toilets), a large number of WWI War Graves, including plots dedicated to Newfoundlanders, become very evident. Explanation: on the north side of Wandsworth Common stands a large, ornate, Franco-Gothic type building (now flats). This was built in 1869 as an orphanage for daughters of deceased Crimean War Servicemen. Come WWI this was taken over as a military hospital which buired some 500 of it’s dead in Earlsfield.
Mike & Andrea19/02/2012 1:17 pm

This and the following section are well provided for, toiletwise, but, there are also decent toilets in Wandsworth Cemetery. A way marker would be handy at Earlsfield Station at the junction of Penwith Road (the text is a bit confusing here). Wimbledon Windmill Museum closed until March.
Mike & Andrea29/01/2012 9:14 pm
Thank you for the information about toilets, we have updated the section page here on the Walk London website. There should have been a waymarker at the junction with Penwith Road just after Earlsfield Station – the route manager will double-check when next in the area. Can you let us know in what way you find the text in the downloadable leaflet confusing so we can change it? We have re-read those paragraphs and can’t see the confusion. You can find more about the Windmill Museum here www.wimbledonwindmill.org.uk/opening_times, the downloadable instructions say it is seasonal, we have made sure the website section says the same.

6 (Wimbledon Park to Richmond Bridge)

Wow,what a stunningly beautiful walk. We enjoyed this section so much that we decided we couldn’t wait for the next.So we just carried on to Osterley Lock. A wonderful day, thank you.
The Lamberts23/06/2012 9:15 pm
Brilliant!
Walk London23/06/2012

Recently completed this section – beautiful! Good news for those unable or unwilling to ‘do steps’ – there is now a road level lights-controlled crossing at the A3, in addition to the stepped footbridge. Point of interest – there is one crossing for pedestrians and one alongside for equestrians with push buttons at rider level! Happy crossing!
W Hayward29/06/2011 8:04 pm
Yes, we love those “pegasus” crossings too!
Walk London29/06/2011

7 (Richmond Bridge to Osterley Lock)

We did this section last weekend (6th May) – a really great walk, and a bonus at this time of year is that there are carpets of bluebells in the woods alongside the canal approaching Osterley Lock.
Martin10/05/2012 11:50 am

A really nice, peaceful section. Syon House is open Easter-Oct only. It is well worth leaving The Grand Union Canal at the A4 and walking the “Golden Mile” (google) as it is known to see some of our best, & luckily, preserved Art Deco architecture. Has been used in many films, TV series etc. Walkers may have noticed how, much of our architectural & industrial heritage in prime locations is being destroyed by developers in order to erect barrack blocks of expensive flats & often denying us views & access.
Mike & Andrea29/01/2012 8:58 pm
Thanks for posting, the Capital Ring path (which goes through Syon Park) that passes Syon House is open all year. You can find more about the House at www.syonpark.co.uk/information

8 (Osterley Lock to Greenford)

Just done several sections and loved it! One sign missing on this section when you cross over the footbridge after Brent Valley Golf course, near Mayfield Primary School, you need to turn left but the sign has gone. You can see where it is missing from the bridge.
Chris30/05/2013 2:54 pm

Well after a summer of excessive eating and drinking we thought we’d get back to some damage limitation walking. We completed sections 8 and 9 yesterday in 27 degrees heat (summer at last). Once again we thoroughly enjoyed both walks, constantly amazed by the ever changing landscapes. Our only complaint is that we only have 6 more sections to complete. Wonderful, thank you.
The Lamberts09/09/2012 6:08 pm

At Western Avenue, if intereted of course, it is worth a stroll along the road eastwards towards Hanger Lane, for about half a mile inorder to view another Art Deco architectural icon, the old Hoover building. It is owned and has been restored by Tesco (store entrance at rear).

9 (Greenford to South Kenton)

We found these instructions a little outdated and a little harder to follow than the others. The instructions mention a tea shop that hasn’t been there for 7 years apparently. We stopped at a brilliant cafe called The Doll’s House on the Hill. http://www.dollshouseonthehill.co.uk/. They serve gluten free afternoon tea. It is somewhat expensive, but a lovely place to refresh. The instructions about West Street are confusing. The only reason you go there is for the tea shop that is no longer there
Sharon Clews02/10/2014 9:17 am

When turning off the Grand Union Canal towards Horsenden Hill, take the alternative route which takes you to what was planned to be a visitor centre but now has a lovely cafe called Tea Darling. It is well worth a rest here and a cup of tea. There are also toilets here.
Four lady ramblers21/07/2014 8:07 am

This route really needs some better signage. Luckily I live in harrow so i know the route…but there is no signs over harrow playing fields. Also over horsden hill it easy to miss the turn as i found out. It is a nice walk with some loverly views
Mike C09/08/2013 3:32 pm

The section behind the hospital is now clear of weeds and has obviously been cut back recently.Through Harrow School all the Capital Ring waymarks have been removed although the footpath signs remain. I was sorely tempted to march back and forth across the field in protest. There was a public notice about a footpath diversion but we couldn’t work out the details because you need a map to refer to.
Cathy06/08/2013 1:52 pm

Walked the stage to South Kenton on 6th July this year and found that the section between the golf course and the hospital was difficult to pass through due to the weeds and brambles, especially for kids who’s arms and faces are much closer to the thorns!
Alastair Ward19/07/2013 5:25 pm

Just finished this section through Harrow. The path alongside Northwick Park Hospital is overgrown with brambles but passable. The hospital is a useful stop for coffee and toilets! A few signs have gone missing particularly through Harrow School grounds but footpaths clear. Now 1/3rd round circle and enjoying every moment.
Birch26/06/2013 4:47 pm

Couple of signs missing on this route.Firstly at Sudbury Hill Harrow station, no sign turning you left down South Vale. Also the signs on the tree lined track between the sports fields at Harrow School have been removed, I suspect by the school judging by the smirk on the face of the groundsmen when I was looking at the posts with missing signs. (I ended up wondering around far more of the school trying to find the correct route so a faulse economy on their part I think!)
Chris30/05/2013 3:01 pm

Got hopelessly lost on this section. The worst bit was trying to find my way across Harrow School playing fields towards Northwick Park followed by no signs on the Northwick Park golf course. I was getting panicky and going round in circles. However, I have decided that this is part of the exercise – to work things out for myself, trust my instincts and build character. However, taking the Capital Ring as a whole, I just love it. Thank you so much whoever you are!
jilla27/10/2012 0:14 pm

An enjoyable stretch but the section running behind Northwick Park hospital requires some attention. It is very overgrown and poorly signed. That said we completed the whole walk today. It has taken some time but has been an excellent and interesting achievement. Congratulations to all involved in building and maintaining the route. Rob & Ally.
Rob22/07/2012 8:54 pm
Thanks for posting your feedback. We have sent the message about the overgrown part to Brent Council. Would you like a certificate for completing the Capital Ring?
Walk London31/07/2012

We walked this section today – Aug 17th. We had no problem with the signage across Harrow Playing Fields – we took the recommended and clearly signposted Capital Ring ‘diversion’ rather than the seemingly more direct route signposted to Watford Road. And the Ducker Path was accessible with no problematic overgrowth. This is an attractive and interesting section, and we didn’t want anyone to be put off – as we could have been – by the problems reported earlier in the summer. Enjoy!
17/08/2011 9:28 pm
Good news, thanks for letting us know – really glad you enjoyed your walk too!
Walk London17/08/2011

I completed the section 9 from Greenford to South Kenton last Sunday 26th June. Whilst it was enjoyable and fascinating, two problems arose, the directions through Harrow School playing fields were not clear and the Ducker Path was difficult to negotiate as brambles were growing over the path. The latter will be impassable in a few weeks time. Otherwise it was a good experience.
Ron Lightning29/06/2011 9:13 am
Thank you for the feedback. It has been passed on to the route manager for a site check, and they will also get in touch with the landowners of the Ducker Path about cutting back the vegetation.

Watch out for lack of signs on Harrow School Sports Fields – ended up going totally the wrong way. I recommend the Dolls House Tea Rooms in Harrow on the Hill, excellent cream tea for £4.95.

10 (South Kenton to Hendon Park)

Back on the trail after a 3 month break. What a fun time we had. As ever the signs were clear and instructions easy to follow. The woodland parts of the walk were lovely and the country parks beautiful. We have to admit to collecting a considerable amount of mud along the way; which resulted in us creeping into a quiet corner of a pub at the end of the day (hoping nobody would notice our bedraggled state) for a well earned dinner. Thank you once again Walk London.
The Lamberts18/12/2012 9:42 pm

I been to capital ring with my parent and it’s nice I love it in July I am going to capital walk Section 10 with my cousins and my aunty. My aunty love walking around and she is first time he’s going.

11 (Hendon Park to Highgate)

Despite its proximity to the North Circular Road for a fair distance, this is a delightful section especially the bit through Hampstead Garden Suburb and Highgate and Queens Woods. However there were a couple of places where the signs seemed to be missing, particularly in the first part of Hampstead Garden Suburb. For instance, the path which leads towards Norrice Lea from Lyttelton Playing Fields didn’t appear to be clearly signed.
Martin04/06/2012 11:50 pm
Thanks for letting us know, we will contact the Borough Council
Walk London04/06/2012

We did the Hendon Park to Highgate section on Saturday 14th January 2012, and can confirm that the diversion is no longer in place. All the roadworks at Henlys Corner are complete.
15/01/2012 6:16 pm
Thank you – a really useful update!
Walk London15/01/2012

We recently walked this section. We looked out for the diversion sign but we think it had been ‘unofficially’ removed, as the first time we came upon a closure sign we were well along Brookside Walk. From there on, we saw barriers along the way but all had been pushed aside. So we continued on and fortunately were able to get safely right along the original Ring line to Finchley Road and beyond. Not sure if we should have done, we’re not recommending this – but no harm done …
W Hayward26/09/2011 3:51 pm

Two things to watch out for on this section are:1 no sign at the junction of Dollis and Mutton Brooks2 the path is closed just after this point and it is necessary to detour around the junction of the A1 and A406. One of the crossings has no pedestrian lights and could be alarming to cross with children or animals. Perhaps Barnet council should be encouraged to sign a safe diversion. Nice walk apart from that!
Doug10/05/2011 9:57 pm
Thank you for your information. The footpath at Brookside walk is closed due to roadworks on the North Circular. More information will be posted when we receive it from Barnet Council.

12 (Highgate to Stoke Newington)

Two issues:1. Path next to New River very muddy and slopes towards the water. This made for very difficult walking.2. The gate out of Clissold Park next to Old St Mary’s church was padlocked shut. Looks like it has been for some time. Those who were thin enogh could slip through a gap in the railings.Highlights – the cafe in Queen’s Wood and Abney Park.
Cathy30/12/2013 9:45 am

I’ve just finished the Capital Ring for the second time; the first time took 4 years in Sunday stages-this time, 4 days!Unfortunately, the section just after Finsbury Park along the New River is extremely sodden, slippy and muddy-I fell over quite badly. This is dangerous near to water.I know it is owned by Thames Water and access is by “permission”, but this put a dampener on this part of the lovely walk. Shoulders still in a lot of pain. Why no simple, cheap, path?!
Paul Oliver04/11/2012 9:52 pm

These next 2 sections are amongst the best. Tube problems meant we started at Gospel Oak Station: a worth-while addition. Out of Station, L under bridge L into Parliament Hill Fields. Pass Lido on R to toilets & café. R. Cross into Swains Lane. Pass Highgate Cemetery (google entry details). See Karl & chums + early TV chef & soap star. Into ornate Waterlow Park. Leave by NE gate & cross H High St into Cholmeley Park. R Causton Rd, cross Archway Rd & view Suicide Br (google) into Northwood Rd & rejoin the Capital Ring.
Mike & Andrea08/03/2012 8:29 pm

Section 12 complete 9/2/2012.Signage missing near West Reservoir. There is lots of construction of new housing and a new firm well-landscaped path but Capital Ring sings have disappeared.

Thanks for posting this. We will contact Hackney Council to see if the signs can be reinstated.
Walk London16/02/2012

We walked Manor House – Stoke Newington section 06.10.11. Very enjoyable but two hazards. At the entrance to the New River path, there was a notice: ‘Path closed due to fallen tree, Thames Water informed’. The tree was a few yards along, with its trunk across the path and we were able to climb over it without difficulty. Further along, just before the East reservoir, is another fallen tree lying across a kissing gate. We were able to crawl underneath it but probably not recommended!

We have reported this to Thames Water but not heard back. Have any other walkers found the same problem?

13 (Stoke Newington to Hackney Wick)

Planning to complete Ring (sections 13 & 14) over the May Bank Holiday weekend. Checked this website for diversions information – found it rather confusingly presented. Could I suggest use of bullet points rather than continuous narrative, and separating background information (e.g. reasons for diversions) from key navigation / route information. Now worked it out, I hope – and also grateful for helpful comments from walkers with experience of the diversions. Wish us luck!
W Hayward30/04/2012 10:26 pm
It is massively complicated. Can’t wait for December 2012 when it all gets back to normal!
Walk London30/04/2012

CR 12 & 13 are great in all respects worth repeat. Visit Stoke N Parish Churches & our ancestors in Abney Park. Lunch in Springfield Pk is a must. Imagine my mum & I watching German bombers from that view point. We terminated this one at Stratford, an easy addition if one is going that way, BUT better signage is needed for the diversions being created daily around the Greenway/ Olympic area. It’s safest to continue on the tow path to Bow flyover & turn up left up Stratford High St to continue.
Mike & Andrea08/03/2012 8:58 pm
Thanks for that, we have updated the Walk London website with information about the closures, see the section page
Walk London08/03/2012

We walked this section today (13/10/11). The towpath has been resurfaced throughout and now offers very easy walking. The Cow Bridge diversion is short and well signed. Information about the diversion around the Olympic site is still in place but the towpath is currently open all the way through to Hackney Wick. There are major works at Carpenters Rd Bridge but the link to Hackney Wick station is still accessible – though we couldn’t find a functioning pub to celebrate a good day’s walk!
W Hayward14/10/2011 7:57 am
Thanks for all this useful information for fellow walkers!
Walk London14/10/2011

Having walked sections 13,14 and 15 today I would say the diversion signage is wanting in places. There was significant diversion sign that pushed me up on to East Way. The signs at the top had been bent and one pointed east which I followed until some time later backtracked. On the towpath – which wasn’t closed – There was a map attached to a post. The two signs on Eastway need attention and I question the need for the confusing and apparently unnecessary diversion sign.

14 (Hackney Wick to Beckton District Park)

The area around the olympic park needs far better signposting. Got lost and ended up adding an extra mile to walk because of no sign posts round pudding mill. From stratford hughstreet onwards it is a decent walk, though be aware of the smell every so often from the NOSE. There was a little bit of work being done on the greenway near the pumping station. Beckton Park was nice.
MikeC06/07/2014 4:47 pm

Finished the walk begun in March of this year (in a snowstorm no less). Very cold and windy and it got dark as I was entering the Woolwich Foot Tunnel. Had a bit of a scramble out the other end due to construction, but muddled ahead to the DLR station (thank goodness for the guide book) and made it back to the hotel in one piece. Next up I think will be the Lea Navigation as I have already walked a fair piece of it between the Captial Ring and the LOOP.
BarbJ21/12/2013 3:32 pm

Diversion off the Greenway by Olympic Stadium due to Crossrail work not well signposted. Have needed both map and directions to be able to complete sections 11-15.
Philip Graves12/10/2013 6:08 pm

Completed Hackney Wick to Woolwich Tunnel today. Signage around Crossrail diversion in Stratford was non existent. Thanks to Colin Saunder’s book it wasn’t a major problem though.
Jon28/05/2013 7:50 pm

We just had a delightful day walking the Capital Ring from Finsbury Park to West Ham. We found it one of the prettiest sections to date, and we are more than halfway around. We struggled a bit with a poorly marked diversion at Ford’s Lock, and at the Olympic viewing towers. A word of caution: this section of the Greenway from near Fords Lock to near Pudding Lane will be closed after April 30 through October, according to signs in the area. Walk it now!
Marianne20/04/2012 5:30 pm
Yes, check out the main section page (Capital Ring 14, Jubilee Greenway 4, Lea Valley Walk 4) for all the information we have about the various closures, diversions and longer-term plans around the Olympic area. Thanks for the feedback!
Walk London20/04/2012

Greenway still closed from the Lea to Stratford High St and beyond to roughly Abbey Pumping Station. Rather than walk eastwards along the main road, and then along Abbey Lane, it is more pleasant to continue along the towpath, under Bow Flyover, to Three Mills Island and then take the footpath to the Greenway. It would be a much better option than along the first part of the Greenway anyway, apart from the fact of being able to see where all your tax has gone.
Mike & Andrea13/03/2012 3:58 pm
Yes there are lots of changes around here because of the Olympics and Crossrail, closures and reopenings and diversions happening all the time. We have updated the Walk London website.
Walk London13/03/2012

Section 14 completed 9/2/2012Signage of diversion south of Old Ford Lock is non-existent. Best route is to follow towpath to Stratford High Street, walk east to signs for Pudding Mill Lane DLR, go north to Pudding Mill Lane DLR and follow signs to visit Olympic viewing area on The Greenway, and then reverse route to the High Street to rejoin Capital Ring.Update as of 17/2/2012: Capital Ring signage at Stratford High Street missing due to Olympics construction. Cross the High Street from north to south and rejoin The Greenway / Capital Ring where they are building the pedestrian overpass.
Lynn12/02/2012 11:24 am

Walk London12/02/2012

Signage just after the Olympic Park, where we were diverted from the Greenway, is non-existent, and site security personnel did not know of the Capital Ring. Good road signage of the diversion would be helpful. The previous route signs have been excellent.

Both sides of the Lea towpath are closed at the moment (June 2011) and walkers may wish to use this route: From Hackney Wick station turn left along Hepscott Road, cross Rothbury Road at the zebra crossing then turn right along Trego Road. Turn left along Wansbeck Road then at a roundabout go straight ahead on Dace Road to either climb steps to the Greenway (signed, on the right) or continue to Old Ford Lock.

Access to/from the Greenway at West Ham is closed during reconstruction. I tried to join the Greenway at West Ham. One cycle route diversion sign pointed away from the Greenway by no more after that. Ended up at Stratford and got the train to Pudding Mill Lane. If a road is closed extensive diversions are put in place. If a footpath is closed a ‘Footpath Closed’ sign is erected. No wonder people don’t walk.
Graham29/04/2011 9:53 pm
Thank you for your feedback. This diversion at West Ham is explained on the section page for the Capital Ring (section 14). We would recommend having a quick look at any section page before walking a route! We are sorry to hear that you had problems at West Ham Station. Access to the Greenway here is closed until early June. We have been in touch with London 2012, who are responsible for the works, and they have put up a diversion sign for walkers showing how to access the Greenway.

Finally finished the entire walk begun in March of this year (in a snow storm no less) on 19 December. It was cold and windy and quite dark by the time I entered the foot tunnel. Had a bit of a scramble on the other side, but finally navigated to the DLR station via the guidebook and made it back to the hotel in one piece. Next up I think will be the Lea Navigation as I have already done a fair piece of it between the Capital Ring and the LOOP. Cheers!
BarbJ21/12/2013 3:35 pm

Completed this enjoyable and interesting section yesterday. Signage good throughout. UEL is a useful coffee and loo stop. The narrow earth path after the marina is overgrown with Giant Hogweed, don’t get it on your skin. George V lock gates were accessible, big thrill! Woolwich Foot Tunnel was open but a helpful Ferryman advised against using it, because the lifts (needed by one of our party) have been out of order for a year and lighting at the South end is defective. So the Ferry it was!
WPH25/06/2013 11:49 am

The Campus of UEL is out of bounds till after the olympics so you cannot walk along the dockside promenade. You have to find the road route to Galleons Reach Station which is clearly marked.
Andrew10/08/2012 9:33 pm
Thanks for this. we will update the website. Somebody recently reported the same for the Jubilee Greenway section 5 (which shares its route with the Capital Ring here).

In response to 22/02/2012. Yes, I was referring to the gate with the button on the opposite wall. As the sign suggested the button was only in operation during daylight hours. After dark the gate is for residents only. The gate merely offers access to Barge House Road. Both east and west sides of the gate remain accessible at all times, so it seems entirely senseless. I didn’t object to any of the parks being closed at night, but why has this new development been allowed to obstruct a footpath?
Ian J Berry27/02/2012 2:54 pm
We have reported the gate to Newham Council.
Walk London27/02/2012

The Woolwich foot tunnel is open (and we used it today on section 15, and indeed had the tunnel to ourselves) but if you don’t look closely you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise. At both ends of the tunnel the entrances are surrounded by hoardings with a small, though clearly signed, gap providing access to the stairs. Worse, on the south side there’s still a notice about closure ‘until spring 2012’ though it reopened before Christmas 2011. Great walk however we’ve done 4 sections now
Martin25/02/2012 11:37 pm
Good advice to fellow walkers, thank you! Anyone found the hoardings are taken down yet?
Walk London25/02/2012

We walked this section Saturday (28-Jan-12) and had no problems with the lock gates. The is building work at UEL which has blocked off most of the slope (and any signs) going down to Cyprus DLR station so we got slightly confused. This is only a problem if you are going Anti-clockwise.
Peter03/02/2012 8:02 pm
The Capital Ring should be walkable and clear in either direction. Have any other walkers found building work at UEL? If so we can try to find out more information and update the website. Please leave a comment here or email [emailprotected]
Walk London07/02/2012

Sunday 18-09-11 both lock gates were locked the King George V and smaller lock just before. Also the footpath is very overgrown on the enclosed pathway nearby making it feel secluded and unsafe to use if travelling alone. However the waterfront near Cyprus DLR was beautiful and tranquil.
18/09/2011 9:54 pm
Thank you. We are in touch (again!) with the managers of the lock gates, trying to get them reopened. We will let Newham know about the overgrown section too.
Walk London18/09/2011

The lock gates at the Royal Docks have unfortunately been closed for a while now, but the diversion via a grassy path and steps up to the road bridge will only add about 10 minutes to your walk. Once over the bridge either continue to Fishguard Way and turn left, or take the (unsigned) path immediately on the left, beside the lock.
PH27/07/2011 5:29 pm
We have been advised by RoDMA that the gates have been undergoing emergency observations, checks and repairs, but that the outer dock gates should fixed by Friday 2nd September 2011. Hi. The walk across the giant lock gates at the King George V dock on the section from Gallions Reach DLR Station along the riverside to Woolwich Ferry is constantly being blocked off due to “mechanical problems” according to RODMA. Strange that vessels can navigate in and out of the lock but walkers cannot access the path over the gates! I’ve been emailing Hamish Stewart at RODMA but do not receive a reply and the gates remain blocked off for no apparent reason. Please protest to get’em open!
